Health at the G8: the ultimate disappointment
9 Luglio 2009
International NGOs working on health do not endorse the G8 document on Africa and development regarding health
“A very disappointing Communiquè, which leaves out crucial issues. Despite the economic crisis, we should have seen greater efforts to support global health”. The assessment of Italian and international organizations working in developing countries are firmly negative on the “Development and Africa” G8 Communiqué.
“First of all, there is no mention of a disbursement plan of the USD 60 billion that should be delivered by 2011 to fight HIV/AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis and to strengthen health systems, promised in Heiligendamm in 2007 and confirmed last year at the Toyako Summit” – says Annalisa Stagni from Action for Global Health, a European NGOs network. “We want the G8 countries to sign a roadmap with clear modalities and timelines of disbursement of the USD 60 billion. This is the minimum amount required to cope with the weakness of the health systems of Southern countries”. The statement has been issued by: Action for Global Health, Osservatorio Italiano AIDS, AIDES, Global Health Advocates, AMREF, Action against AIDS Germany, Africa Japan Forum, AIDS Infoshare.
